I am interested in host-pathogen interactions following infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Only 5-10% of individuals exposed to Mtb are estimated to develop active Tuberculosis (TB) disease. My research focusses on the role of host-specific factors in progression to active TB disease. Besides this we want to develop a better understanding of how one pathogen can influence the disease outcome of another pathogen in patients that have been co-infected with Mtb and viruses, such as SARS-CoV2 and HIV. We are hoping to identify immunological correlates of risk and protection from disease following exposure to multiple pathogens.
