Phoebe Mbabazi, MD

Biography

Phoebe Mbabazi received her MBChB and MMED degrees from Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, one of the premier medical schools in East Africa. She also received additional clinical fellowship training at the University of Alberta in Canada as well as a more recent focused fellowship in geriatric HIV at the University of Turin in Italy. She is a physician on the infectious disease unit of Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, which also serves as the teaching hospital for Makerere University. Her work in Mulago motivated her to pursue a research career with a target of addressing the unique needs of an increasing number of people who are aging with HIV in Uganda. To achieve this aim, she enrolled as a PhD fellow at the Infectious Disease Institute (IDI) in Mulago. Over the past two years, she has been working as a study coordinator of a newly formed HIV and aging cohort at the IDI. For the CFAR project she has assembled a terrific mentoring team including Barbara Castelnuovo, an experienced clinical investigator at the IDI in Kampala. Most recently adding mentorship in Geriatrics from UCSF’s Meredith Greene, and mentorship from Peter Hunt on translational immunology and biomarkers.
