My career goals are to combine clinical medicine and basic research to understand the etiology of diagnostically challenging infectious diseases both locally and globally. My research leverages metagenomic and transcriptional profiling to identify pathogens responsible for severe respiratory infections while concurrently evaluating the host immunologic response. I’m also interested in understanding the mechanisms by which environmental exposures modulate respiratory infection severity and susceptibility. These studies incorporate both clinical and basic-science aspects and stem from diverse patient cohorts in the U.S., Africa and Central America.
