The Clinical and Population Sciences Core provides basic science and clinical investigators access to specimens and data from clinically well-characterized human subjects. It also seeks to stimulate and support the design and implementation of innovative translational clinical studies.
The reconfigured Clinical Core offers services under three subcores:
Treatment Cohorts (SCOPE) Subcore
- SCOPE is an ongoing, prospective cohort based at Ward 86, providing researchers with well-characterized data and specimens
- The clinical core also serves other NIH-funded treatment cohorts at UCSF through mentoring, development, specimen banking
- Supports the Uganda-based UARTO (extant data and specimens) and other international cohorts
Participant Referral Service (Ward 86) Subcore
- This new referral service will coordinate clinical research recruitment for SCOPE and other investigator-initiated studies from the Ward 86 clinic, a safety-net clinic serving diverse, publicly insured patients
- Dedicated clinical research coordinator and data manager staff facilitate recruitment for ESIs and URM investigators
Specimen Processing and Storage Subcore
- Also known as the AIDS Specimen Bank, this subcore supports the biorepository needs of CFAR investigators with specimen processing; data management; and short-and long-term specimen storage and shipment
- Provides access to novel techniques in biobanking (including LDMS system) applied to help assure safety of specimens and east of distribution
- Consultation and guidance from senior biostatistics faculty. Contact Jeffrey Martin, PhD, MPH for assistance.
- Provide expertise in the clinical and population sciences related to HIV/AIDS research via consultation regarding conception of research questions, study design, sources of data, data management, biostatistical analysis, and interpretation of data.
- Manage unique prospective observational cohorts of HIV-infected subjects in both San Francisco (SCOPE) and Africa (UARTO and ISS Clinic Cohorts) that provide basic and translational researchers with a diverse array of biological specimens and data from subjects who are well-characterized in terms of epidemiologic, clinical, laboratory and behavioral parameters.
- Offer a platform for the efficient conduct of newly proposed prospective human subjects studies.
- Mentor junior investigators in the conduct of research involving human subjects.
