SCOPE & UCSF Treatment Cohorts Subcore

Core Co-Directors

Description of Services

The SCOPE cohort enrolls people with HIV (with some HIV negative control participants) into studies examining the pathophysiology, immunology, persistence, and cure strategies for HIV. Data and specimens are readily accessible for investigators across the CFAR.

Based at ZSFGH, SCOPE has enrolled 2219 HIV-infected and 280 HIV-uninfected subjects since its inception in 2001. Long-acting ART will be a major focus of new studies in SCOPE during this period. Moreover, SCOPE provides project-specific mentoring to ESIs and a structure allowing nimble addition of proposed new studies.

    Key Studies and Cohorts

In addition to SCOPE, these studies constitute a Core resource for the entire UCSF HIV/AIDS research community and include:

    • The Options Project of persons recently infected with HIV
    • The Uganda AIDS Rural Treatment Outcomes (UARTO) cohort, a clinic-based study of HIV-infected adults newly initiating antiretroviral therapy in Africa
    • The Mbarara, Uganda Immune Suppression Syndrome (ISS) Clinic Cohort, which captures the entire experience of a municipal HIV/AIDS clinic in Africa
    • The CFAR Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS), a collaboration of 9 CFAR centers who conduct outcomes research using a system of combined electronic medical records.
