DESCRIPTION: The two-day workshop is an intensive and interactive meeting designed to provide faculty in HIV research with the tools for more effective mentoring, especially of mentees of diversity (defined mainly as those from underrepresented racial/ethnic minorities). The workshops discusses barriers related to being an early career investigator of diversity (e.g. microaggressions, unconscious bias), and features didactic and interactive sessions on practical tips for mentoring, including sessions on distance mentoring, funding sources for mentoring efforts, time management, leadership styles, manuscript writing, grant writing, individual development plans, teaching work-life balance to mentees, alternative funding strategies, forming teams, etc. Descriptions and findings from the 1st workshop, the 2nd workshop and the 3rd workshop are found here.

REGISTRATION: Thank you for your interest in the Mentoring the Mentors Workshop for HIV Researchers 2018. Registration (“Registration” needs to be a hyperlink to the registration form) for participation in the workshop is now open. Please be sure to complete all fields in the registration form, a missed response will result in your Registration form (“Registration form” should also be a hyperlink) to not be submitted. Registration for the workshop will close on Friday November 14th, 2017. Registrants accepted to participate in the workshop will be notified by email the week of November 21st, 2017.

There will be travel and lodging scholarships available to support airfare/hotel for selected applicants based on need. Potential participants interested in applying for the travel scholarship should indicate this interest on the Registration Form. Investigators interested in applying for a travel and lodging scholarship should send a recent CV along with a cover letter indicating your interest in the workshop and your interest in the mentoring training to Stephen May at [email protected].

WORKSHOP VENUE: TENTATIVE UCSF Helen Diller Family Cancer Research Building, Mission Bay

LODGING: Lodging costs will not be covered by the meeting organizers. We will arrange a limited number of rooms at a Group Rate at a local hotel. More information will be posted to this website when available.

MEALS: Breakfast and lunch will be provided on both days of the workshop and a group dinner will also be provided at a local San Francisco restaurant the evening of Monday January 22nd, 2018.

TRANSPORTATION: For out-of-town participants, we will arrange a shuttle for round-trip transportation between the workshop hotel and the workshop venue. Exact details of those shuttles will be provided to participants in a separate email. For ground transportation between your hotel and the airport, convenient taxis are available at the airport at rates of $45-$55, and Super Shuttle is available for shared transit at a cost of approximately $20. No advance reservation for taxi or Super Shuttle is necessary on arrival in San Francisco, although reservation will be required for return to the airport on Super Shuttle.
