Biography

Sarah Puryear is an internal medicine physician and current infectious disease fellow at UCSF. She holds a co-appointment as a research fellow within the CFAR Traineeship in AIDS Prevention Studies. Sarah is a clinician-researcher focused on improving care for underserved and impoverished populations globally. She has interests in global health and infectious diseases, specifically HIV and tuberculosis.

Sarah has practiced medicine in diverse settings from East Baltimore to India to South Africa. Her research has focused on HIV and tuberculosis in various settings in Southern and East Africa. Most recently, Sarah was an Afya Bora Fellow with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Nairobi where she focused on HIV/TB program implementation and TB epidemiology. Sarah’s current research efforts at UCSF are focused on TB preventative strategies in HIV patients in Uganda and Kenya as well as characterizing TB infection in the era of HIV test and treat. She received her MD from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed her residency in internal medicine through the Osler Internal Medicine Program at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
