Biography

Dr. Garcia is an Assistant Professor at San Jose State University and his research explores health inequities associated with infectious diseases based on the intersections of race, class, sexuality, and gender. A special emphasis has been placed on HIV-related factors among Black and Latino/a/x sexual and gender minorities (SGM). Dr. Garcia developed and implemented for the Houston Health Department a culturally responsive community-based program to detect and respond to HIV cluster outbreaks (Molecular HIV Surveillance) among Latino/a/x SGMs. He also administered a bilingual (English/Spanish) comparative mixed-methods study exploring HIV-related factors among Latino/x cisgender male sexual minorities in San Juan, PR and San Antonio, TX. Dr. Garcia’s overall goal is to enhance implementation science frameworks for culturally responsive interventions for racial/ethnic SGMs.
