Biography

I am a Senior Research Scientist at the Center for Public Health Research in the San Francisco Department of Public Health and jointly an Adjunct Assistant professor at the University of California, San Francisco, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. I am one of a small number of researchers whose expertise is research with the transgender community and I have been conducting HIV research with this population since 2000. I am PI of the first Demonstration project to engage trans people in PrEP - the Stay Study (PR15-SFDPH-02). I was PI of the first longitudinal social and epidemiological study of HIV risk and resilience among young transwomen ages 16-24 wherein we recruited 350 trans-female youth to the study to date (the SHINE study - R01MH095598). I am also joint PI with Dr. McFarland of the first prospective international HIV incidence study of transwomen being conducted in four countries (the Trans*National Study - R01MH095598). I was also recently a co-Investigator for the first HIV surveillance study of transmen in the U.S. and am the site evaluation PI for a HRSA Special Project of National Significance to develop and test an intervention to engage and retain transwomen of color in their HIV care. I was the PI for the Transgender Research Youth Project (TRYP), which was one of the first studies of HIV risk among trans*female youth.
