Dr. Michael Mugavero is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and Co-Director of the UAB Center for AIDS Research (CFAR). His HIV health services and outcomes research program has made seminal contributions to HIV prevention and treatment science, particularly in the areas of care engagement, ART adherence and viral suppression. Dr. Mugavero is recognized as a national leader in retention in care, having published extensively on conceptual models, measurement, monitoring, correlates and evidence-informed intervention approaches to enhance HIV care engagement. He currently serves as a member of the AETC National Coordinating Resource Center (NCRC) Steering Committee, Key Opinion Leader (KOL) for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Prevention IS Care campaign, and as an Advisory Committee member to AIDSVu. Dr. Mugavero served as Interventions Section Chair for International HIV Adherence Guidelines Panel published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, and as a Workgroup Leader for the AETC National Resource Center (NRC) Engagement in Care workgroup from 2012-13. He served as Scientific Co-Chair for the International Conference on HIV Treatment and Prevention Adherence from 2014-17, and is a Co-Chair for the 2019 National HIV Prevention Conference convened by CDC. Dr. Mugavero is a medical care provider for persons living with HIV at the UAB 1917 HIV Clinic, and serves on the Alabama Regional Quality Management Group consisting of 8 Ryan White clinics statewide, as well as a member of the Alabama HIV Prevention and Care Planning Group convened by the Alabama Department of Public Health.

CFAR will be hosting a casual networking lunch for Early Stage Investigators with Dr. Mugavero from 12:15-1:30 on April 1st in the ZSFG Building 80 (995 Potrero Avenue) 4th floor conference room. Attendees will have the opportunity to give a one-minute elevator pitch to Dr. Mugavero and the other ESI colleagues. These lunches also provide an opportunity for you to seek career advice from a senior HIV researcher and ask questions about their career course.
