Background
The science of the UCSF CFAR will be more impactful if those participating in our studies are representative of the local and national epidemic. In the 2019 San Francisco Epidemiology surveillance report, Black/African American men and women had the highest HIV diagnosis rates by race, followed by Latinx ethnicity. Inequitable inclusion in research can limit generalizability of findings and a detailed understanding of the social and economic drivers of health disparities. The diverse Ward 86 HIV Clinic cares for publicly insured patients and is located two floors up from the research floor where SCOPE is located. New and established patients will have the opportunity to provide informed consent to join (e.g., patients will sign a consent form if interested at new patient visits or regular visits to be contacted about research studies). Their data relevant to research studies will then be downloaded from the electronic medical record to a secure database maintained by the Clinical Core data manager. The data manager can then efficiently query the database for participants that fit the inclusion criteria of various studies; the research recruitment coordinator will then reach out to eligible participants to recruit for a variety of CFAR studies, including SCOPE.
